About Nancy

Nancy R Hay, MA, LPC, LISAC

Hay Counseling & Consulting, Inc., (480)820-6246

Nancy Hay is a licensed counselor in private practice in Mesa, AZ and in that capacity has worked with people in the airline industry for over 20 years. She serves as the “human service professional” on CIRP teams for multiple airlines and has facilitated debriefings for both large scale and small scale airline accidents/ incidents. She has also been actively involved with the HIMS program conducting intervention training, assessing individuals for addiction, facilitating aftercare groups for pilots, and providing training at the HIMS conventions.

The foundation of Nancy’s career was built on extensive experience in the chemical dependency field in Minnesota. She began as a counselor and family therapist, was promoted to Program Director, then Executive Director for an adolescent inpatient and adult outpatient facility. As a consultant, she developed and implemented addiction treatment centers around the country and helped school systems create support groups for their students. She conducted training nationally and internationally to groups such as the military, Department of Defense schools, government agencies, corporations, and small businesses. She was an adjunct facility member for the Johnson Institute, Community Intervention, and Chemical Awareness Training Institute.

In her private practice, she works extensively with pilots and their spouses in both individual and couples counseling. Understanding that the “pilot personality” and effective communication in relationships are not a natural fit, Nancy has helped hundreds of couples improve their relationships, learn to honor their differences, and negotiate the airline lifestyle. She is currently producing an on-line interactive education program for airline couples and families covering conflict resolution, stress management, parenting, improving communication and enhancing intimacy in relationships.

Nancy Hay has a Masters of Art degree from St. Mary’s University in MPLS, MN, is licensed as a professional counselor, an independent substance abuse counselor in AZ, and certified in EMDR (for trauma therapy).

ā€œI’m from an aviation family. My mother was an aeronautical engineer and designed dive bombers during WWII. My uncle, a Lt. Commander in the Navy, was in the first astronaut program and later flew for Air America. I have a brother and a cousin who are pilots today. I love this population and am grateful to have been part of it for over 20 years.ā€ - Nancy Hay

"As the Director of Aviation Medicine Advisory Service, I have had the pleasure of working with Nancy Hay for many years. She has been an invaluable resource for pilots and their families. In the unstable aviation environment of today, it is comforting for pilots to have access to a clinical professional who understands the unique stressors of this industry - and can help them build and maintain healthy relationships to navigate the turbulent waters of their profession."
